Diamonds claim to be our fairer sex's best friend. The visual treat that one gets from looking at one is definitely worth the amount that you might be asked to pay for one. But not many know that these diamonds usually have a different side to them and in quite a literal sense. Diamonds usually sparkle in normal light. And even in this light, one must notice that they do so in different hues. This is because of the impurities that it contains within. Another reason for this phenomenon is that the way a diamond is cut. This has a huge bearing on the look and the hue and most importantly the pricing of the jewel.

Diamond Fluorescence

One of the ways that people determine the purity and price of the diamond is by viewing them under ultra violet lighting. This brings out its ‘true' colors so to speak. A diamond in this case can be characterized as one which has different Diamond Fluorescence when shown under UV lighting. They vary from being strongly fluorescent to being moderately so. And there of course exists the variations between these two types. This is a very important factor as the costing of the diamond and the subsequent jewellery sold depends heavily on this. The strongest color is when these stones show a blue haze. The blue fluorescence has the highest quality but there are other factors which need to be considered before zeroing in on one. Mostly experts recommend going for the one which is neither too strong not too light in its blue fluorescence. But they all advise against getting a diamond even if they have a good blue hue but along with that if they exhibit a white shade. This is a clear indication that they are not of the good quality that one is looking at owning.

Diamond Fluorescence

The fact of the matter is diamonds with a very strong hue is very rare and they are extremely costly and they usually cost the earth. Their color grade varies from the official classification of J to M. When there is a high fluorescence level, it makes the passing of the light very difficult and hence makes it appear milky. The Diamond Fluorescence is still something that warrants intense discussions and debates in the jewellery circles. When looking at buying diamonds it is important to remember that it is not just the UV property which matters but also the cut with which the diamond is sold. This has a huge bearing on the quality and pricing.

Fluorescence refers to the emission of radiation by a certain substance when it is exposed to any external radiation like X-ray. This emission is mostly of visible light. A diamond has the property of giving out fluorescence as well. Diamond is a gemstone each one of us is aware of, especially women who consider it as their best friend.

Diamond Fluorescence

Diamond fluorescence is blue in color, and is produced when a diamond is given exposure to ultraviolet rays. The color of the fluorescence or luminescence given out by a diamond is of yellow or white color at times. Fluorescence emitted by a diamond on being exposed to some outside radiation might have various effects on the original color of the diamond, ranging from gentle ones to severe ones. A diamond with a yellowish tint in its crystalline structure when brought under some radiation, mainly ultra violet rays, gives a blue fluorescence. This fluorescence is powerful enough to cover up the original yellowish hue of the diamond.

Diamond fluorescence of yellowish color has a strong effect on white diamond as well. Such diamonds look whiter than before under some outside radiation. Besides this effect, such diamonds get a yellowish shade as well in addition to their strong white color.

This property of diamonds to give out fluorescence in the presence of an outside radiation casts an effect on their prices too. The yellow glow of diamonds lowers the original price of a diamond, while diamonds emitting out a bluish luminescence have more value as their prices rise because of the blue colored fluorescence.

In many cases, diamond fluorescence goes unnoticed, thus has no significant effect on its price and value.

Gemological Institute of America or more commonly known as GIA carried a detailed research regarding people's perception of blue fluorescence given out by a diamond. Common masses and trading professionals were inquired whether the fluorescence of diamond affects them or not. The results of this study exhibited the fact that non-traders could not differentiate between diamonds that give fluorescence and non-fluorescent diamonds

The luminescence given out by a diamond may at times enhance its value in the eyes of its user. People unaware of this term or property of diamond, might consider this low of light given by a diamond special and beautiful. Perception of the fluorescence of diamonds varies from individual to individual, and trader to trader; and can be positive or negative depending on the type of glow given out by the diamond.
